Zipang: JDS Mirai, a wonderful missile-guided destroyer of its time

Hey people,

for those who are interested in military especially navy stuff, I recommend you watch this! It's a bit an old seasoned anime but oh well though the effects are pretty nice even though it's from 2004.

Manga Cover of Zipang

Zipang is a story about the most advanced advanced destroyer in the Japan Marine Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the JDS Mirai from the Yukinami-class missile guided destroyer.

JDS Mirai

This destroyer, people on board and also the somewhat Osprey chopper in the hangar, is fictional specifically created for the anime; Zipang. The missile guided destroyer, Mirai, is an improved version of the modern Kongo-class destroyer. It has the Aegis Combat system which can detect several ships, aircrafts and even incoming missiles or torpedoes.

The Aegis Combat System detecting 2 torpedoes.

Now I will go ahead with the story but only with the first 2 episodes, my style lol. The JDS Mirai and 3 other JMSDF ships were headed to the Pacific Ocean, sPACIFICally (pun) to Hawaii for joint exercises with the United States Navy. Yeah, they sailed off smoothly in the Pacific. They were even having a little training like dodging torpedoes and stuff. So they were sailing, sailing, and sailing. The full moon was up not until a storm arrived and covered up the moon. The ship gets struck with lightning but no worries, even a lightning can't hurt good, new Mirai.

Lightning hits Mirai.

And so, they thought they were still in contact with the other vessels. Their, what you may call it, measuring tools like speed or direction and even watches went nuts. Not long after, the storm breaks out but it was already dark. They tried to contact the others but no luck. Their satellite map wasn't even working.

Speedometer (?) going nuts.

As they were still sailing, clueless to what happened, there were more surprising events that would happen after that. They saw a huge, unidentified warship with what it looks like, a sun emblem on its front, 2 turrets with 3 46cm cannons on them. It was flashing its lights to send a message but Mirai ignored it. Then behind the huge ship's deck was another turret with 3 46cm cannons.

Mysterious ship with an Imperial Navy emblem.

What could this possible mean? This is a battleship-sized ship, weren't they banned a few years ago? Oh, you guessed the name of the monster? What was that? Yamato?! The biggest warship in the world with 3 x 3 46cm cannons? Lol, I should stop and answer the questions, starting from, no, all of them at once. The crew of Mirai couldn't believe it but that was the Yamato, , the flagship of the Combined Fleet and the biggest battleship in the world.

I am going to stop there to avoid any more spoilers (^.^). Most of the show is composed of talking but nonetheless, you get to see an epic action between the Mirai and the unknown. Now go, watch to your heart's content!
